IRAN – September 22, 2025 — A study published in the RPC Journal of Medical Sciences, provides compelling evidence for the efficacy of raw onion juice as a natural topical treatment for hair loss, specifically in cases of Alopecia Areata. The research contributes to the growing interest in alternative, natural remedies for hair thinning and baldness, a condition that can cause significant psychological distress.
Study Methodology and Impressive Results
The paper summarizes a study designed to evaluate the effectiveness of topical raw onion juice in patients with Alopecia Areata.
- Participants: The study included 38 male and female patients with alopecia areata. For the comparative trial, patients were divided into two groups: the onion juice group with 23 patients (16 male, 7 female) and a control group with 15 patients treated with tap water.
- Treatment Protocol: Both groups were instructed to apply their respective treatment to the affected areas of the scalp twice daily for two months.
- Outcome: Regrowth of coarse, terminal hair began after just two weeks of treatment in the raw onion juice group.
- Hair regrowth was observed in 17 out of 23 patients (73.9%) after four weeks.
- After six weeks, hair regrowth was observed in 20 patients (86.9%).
- Hair regrowth was significantly greater in males (93.7%) than in females (71.4%).
- In contrast, the tap water control group showed hair regrowth in only 2 patients (13%) after eight weeks.
The findings strongly suggest that raw onion juice is a significantly more effective topical treatment for Alopecia Areata than tap water.
The Science Behind the Remedy
The paper explores the reasons behind onion juice’s hair-strengthening properties, attributing its effectiveness largely to its mineral composition:
- Sulfur Content: Onions are rich in edible sulfur, a mineral necessary for producing enzymes and proteins. Sulfur is a component of keratin, the protein that makes up hair. The sulfur in onion juice is believed to increase collagen production, thereby promoting hair growth and increasing hair volume.
- Antimicrobial and Antioxidant Action: Onion juice possesses antimicrobial properties that fight scalp infections, which can otherwise lead to hair loss, fostering a healthier scalp and stronger follicles. It also contains antioxidants such as flavonoids, which protect hair follicles from damage by free radicals that contribute to the aging process and hair thinning.
Overcoming the Drawback and Future Direction
While the results are compelling, the most significant obstacle to widespread use is the onion’s pungent odor. The author notes that adding a few drops of essential oil or lemon juice can mitigate the strong smell.
The study’s author emphasizes the need for new studies to develop odorless and tasteless food and pharmaceutical products derived from garlic and onions to ensure that all their beneficial biological properties are preserved and made more palatable for consumers.
